On Thursday 17th October, our administrator was sent an email from someone claiming to be The. Rev. Meagan Crosby-Shearer using a false email address.

An email fraudster is sending out emails to people associated with our Incumbent. The first one that we know of was sent out October 17th using the email address slim539@comcast.net.

The text of the first email:

Subject: Confirm Your Availability

Please confirm if you are available, I will need you to complete a request for me.

Thanks,

Meagan Crosby-Shearer

I encourage you to get the word out about this fraud and to pass on the message that no one from our parish or diocese will ever contact people through any email proxy other than the legitimate extensions using @stmatthiasvictoria.ca or @bc.anglican.ca.

Messages from The Rev. Meagan Crosby-Shearer will always come from incumbent@stmatthiasvictoria.ca  or  mcrosbyshearer@bc.anglican.ca.

Please read the sending email address carefully before opening or responding to an email.

Our administrator has taken steps to report this to the synod office as there has also been other occurrences of email fraud within other parishes in our locality.

If you receive an email like this or are an email you are unsure about, please view the Canadian Antifraud Centre website’s advice at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm and also report it to us here at admin@stmatthiasvictoria.ca so we can make people aware of the scam emails and addresses to look out for.

Parishioners with Apple products can also forward these kinds of-unwanted or any suspicious messages to: reportphishing@apple.com. https://www.apple.com/ca/legal/more-resources/phishing/ You can add Apples report phishing address in your contact list for ease of forwarding.
