Sunday Worship, Truth and Reconciliation, Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Blessing of the Animals

Sunday Worship, Truth and Reconciliation, Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Blessing of the Animals

Sunday, October 1, 2023

We are in the Season of Creation from September 1 through October 4.  This is a special time to renew our relationship with the Creator and all Creation.  Interested in learning more?  Follow this link:  https://seasonofcreation.org/   This year, the theme is "Let justice and peace flow."

This Sunday we mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. We wear Orange Shirts to remember the victims and survivors of the residential school system. We seek to right the colonial wrongs of the past, to repent for the harms committed against Creation, and to come into right relationship with Indigenous peoples.

This Sunday we will be blessing the animals after the service (by the Labyrinth, weather depending). Please bring your beloved pet or a picture of a beloved pet to receive a blessing for the ways that our fellow creatures enhance our lives and our world.

The Season of Creation is an ecumenical observance -- meaning that it's shared throughout an incredible range of Christian denominations.  (Just in case you wondered:  all are welcome, no experience or "membership" required!) We'll mark it with special prayers and music to link us to these reflections. On October 4, we'll remember St. Francis of Assisi -- we mark this Feast on October 1st with our Blessing of the Animals.

Reach out with any questions you might have or if you would like to be a reader, greeter or pray-er! Email admin@stmatthiasvictoria.ca

See you on Sunday! (Next Sunday, October 8th, there will be road closures for the Royal Victoria Marathon, see the bottom of this newsletter for details in planning your route to church)

The Gates of Hell Will Not Prevail

The Gates of Hell Will Not Prevail

Why We Don't Need to Save the Church - Saturday, September 30, 2023

Vancouver School of Theology & Christ Church Cathedral present a free workshop with The Rev. Scott Gunn

This event is offered both In-Person and Online.

Sometimes you hear people say the church is dying and that our task is to save it. Scott Gunn will lead us through conversation about how Jesus promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against the church, and he’s the saviour, not us! But as we look toward the future in a post-Christendom world, the church needs to focus on discipleship and evangelism in a way it has not done for centuries.

The Rev. Scott Gunn is executive director of Forward Movement, a discipleship ministry of the Episcopal Church in the USA. He travels widely as preacher, speaker, and retreat leader. Author of several books, his most recent book is Easter Triumph, Easter Joy: Meditations for the Fifty Days of Eastertide. Prior to serving at Forward Movement, Scott was a parish priest in the Diocese of Rhode Island. Before that, he had a career in information technology. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with his spouse, the Rev. Sherilyn Pearce.

Lunch is included for in-person attendees.

To register, please click on the registration button and complete the Evenbrite Registration for this event.

Blood in the Rocks

Blood in the Rocks

The Victoria Smallpox Epidemic of 1862-63 - Saturday, September 30, 2023

This event is sponsored and provided as part of this year's John Albert Hall Lecture Series.

Christ Church Cathedral invites downtown Victoria neighbours and visitors to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by hearing the perspectives of Indigenous knowledge holders on an epidemic whose devastating impact continues to the present day.

On Saturday September 30 from 7-9 p.m., attendees will gather to view There’s Blood in the Rocks, a moving short video about the 1862-63 Victoria smallpox epidemic by Marianne Nicolson, Kwakwaka’wakw artist-activist, and to hear from Dr Nicolson and from Snxakila Clyde Michael Tallio, a ceremonial speaker of the Nuxalk First Nation, about the epidemic and the resurgence of BC’s First Peoples.

Guests will come together for some light nourishment and to reflect on what they have heard. This event is free to attend and online registration is recommended. Voluntary donations will go to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

Registration information to come.

Running in the Spirit, RVM 5k

Running in the Spirit, RVM 5k

Join us for a community run! - Saturday, October 7, 2023

Join Running in the Spirit for the Royal Victoria Marathon 5k on Saturday, October 7, 9 AM start. Running in the Spirit is an ecumenical running group with Inclusive Christians at UVic, supported by local congregations. This is an opportunity to run with a group accepting of any running ability. Feel free to run/walk or fast walk the course. If you haven't run in awhile we will be offering some training runs to get people used to running shorter distances of 1-2 km and slowly working your way up. We can also help configure a training plan for you that you can do on your own schedule. Often it's being part of a supportive team and having a goal to stay motivated that helps staying focused. The 5k course time limit is 60 min. which is enough time for most runners and fast walkers to finish.

Register now to secure the lowest registration fee. Sometimes races sell out as the race date approaches.

Registration link here: https://www.runvictoriamarathon.com/

When registering you can join our team by selecting "Running Groups" and "Running in the Spirit" when prompted to select a team name.

Others will also be racing longer distances on Sunday, October 8, including the 8k, half (21.1 km), and full marathon (42.2 km). However longer distances require proper training, especially the half and full marathons. The 5k is suitable for kids and adults with moderate fitness who can slowly run, walk/run, or fast walk for 5 km. Races include cut-off times, to honour road closures, aid stations, and volunteers supporting the course.

Contact Pr. Lyndon at pastorlyndon@shaw.ca for more info.
