Alesha Fowlie - Artist Statement

I have a solid background as a painter and working with water-media, (acrylic, watercolour, gouache and ink) has been the foundation of my art practice for many years. However, primarily I am an artist with unending curiosity and desire to seek out different ways of making and creating. I like to try out every art medium and explore new methods and materials, but also often recycle and create from non-traditional materials and found objects. My recurring themes are nature and the wild world co-existing with the structures we build and the mark we make on the landscape. Inspired by ritual and spirituality, I seek out what is beneath the surface and what we look for to bring meaning to our lives. I walk a line between abstraction and realism, often tearing and deconstructing various pieces and reassembling them in a new work. While I like to draw and plan the direction of every piece, it is the process and the muse that guide me as I work in my studio, often on several pieces at once.

My current works are all about memory and revisiting what inspired me in the past. By re-creating or deconstructing and remaking pieces made at a different time of my life, I make peace with who I was and who I am now. I always hope what I put into my work is communicated with people who will view and connect with the piece in a meaningful way.
