Hearts lifted in gratitude
This past weekend we celebrated the feast of St Francis with the blessing of the animals! The joint service with the AbbeyChurch was full of joy and one of the more diverse groups of animal companions we have had, including stuffies, paw prints, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and even a bearded dragon! In the culmination of the season of creation, we were reminded that all things are created in God's image and how we treat our animal companions and indeed all the earth, shapes the flourishing of our human lives. This coming week we move toward the celebration of Harvest Thanksgiving. Friday night, our organist Daniel Brown will lead us in some wonderful hymns and Sunday we will lift our prayers of thanksgiving and bring in symbols of the harvest. Feel free to bring something from your garden or perhaps a poem you have been working on, a drawing, or reflection - Something that represents the abundance God continues to bring even in these uncertain times. We will put these on the altar this Sunday. Weather permitting, after worship we will share some of the bounties of our own land with apples and tomatoes grown right here at St. Matthias!

Orange Shirt Day Commemorationsaround the diocese Across the diocese, our worshipping communities found creative ways to commemorate Orange Shirt Day & the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, during the pandemic. They offered prayers, sang, listened and learned. We offer all that we have done this day, with deep humility and repentance. At St Matthias, we watched 'Grace will lead them Home' a service of prayer and reflection prepared by Indigenous Anglican Elders punctuated by times of quiet prayer, confession, candle lighting and meditation on a painting shared by Nicola Rendell. At noon we joined folk from across Victoria to listen and learn and watch in silence as the orange shirt day flag was raised. The Chapel Gallery Presents: FoundationsAnnie Smith & Andrea Spalding - Friday, October 15, 2021 The Chapel Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition by two Pender Island artists, Andrea Spalding and Annie Smith. Smith and Spalding explore that which is foundational in their lives, through book arts, portraiture, watercolor, and washi screens.
The past year, with all its upheaval, has left many people pondering their foundations—perhaps rethinking what remains solid and unshakeable in their lives. In this show, two Pender Island artists, Andrea Spalding and Annie Smith, explore that which is foundational for themselves and encourage viewers to think about their own “solid ground,” as well. Through book art, portraiture, watercolor, and washi screens, Andrea and Annie celebrate family, friends, literature, and nature – those elements that have given them strength and sustained them in the time of Covid.
The Opening will be a "non-social" opening, with a videoed Artist Talk playing throughout the opening as our visitors wait to visit the Gallery.
When attending the Chapel Gallery, please join us in respecting the Provincial Health Officer's direction regarding mask wearing and vaccination. Thank you for contributing to all our health and wellbeing!
